Lists with This Book. The Mennonites are members of certain Christian groups belonging to the church communities of Anabaptist denominations named after Menno Simons — of Friesland which today is a province of the Netherlands.
Through his writings, Simons articulated and formalized the teachings of earlier Swiss founders. The early teachings of the Mennonites were founded on the belief in both the mission and ministry of Jesuswhich the original Anabaptist followers held to with great conviction despite persecution by the various Roman Catholic and Protestant states.
An early set of Mennonite beliefs was codified in the Dordrecht Confession of Faith in but the various groups do not hold to a common confession or creed. Rather than fight, the majority of these followers survived by fleeing to neighboring states where ruling families were tolerant of their belief in believer's baptism.
Over the years, Mennonites have become known as one of the historic peace churches because of their commitment to pacifism. In contemporary 21st-century society, Mennonites either are described only as a religious denomination with members of different ethnic origins or as both an ethnic group and a religious denomination.
There is controversy among Mennonites about this issue, with some insisting that they are simply a religious group while others argue that they form a distinct ethnic group. Conservative Mennonite groups, who speak Pennsylvania GermanPlautdietsch Low Germanor Bernese German fit well into the definition of an ethnic group, while more liberal groups and converts in developing countries do not.
There are about 2. Mennonites can be found in communities in 87 countries on six continents. The early history of the Mennonites starts with the Anabaptists in the German and Dutch-speaking parts of central Europe.
These forerunners of modern Mennonites were part of the Protestant Reformationa broad reaction against the practices and theology of the Roman Catholic Church. Its most distinguishing feature is the rejection of infant baptisman act that had both religious and political meaning since almost every infant born in western Europe was baptized into the Roman Catholic Church.
Other significant theological views of the Mennonites developed in opposition to Roman Catholic views or to the views of other Protestant reformers such as Martin Luther and Huldrych Zwingli. Some of the followers of Zwingli's Reformed church thought that requiring church membership beginning at birth was inconsistent with the New Testament example.
They believed that the church should be completely removed from government the proto— free church traditionand that individuals should join only when willing to publicly acknowledge belief in Jesus and the desire to live in accordance with his teachings.
In the spirit of the times, other groups came to be, preaching about reducing hierarchy, relations with the state, eschatologyand sexual license, running from utter abandon to extreme chastity. These movements are together referred to as the " Radical Reformation ". They joined forces to fight the movement, using methods such as banishment, torture, burning, drowning or beheading. Despite strong repressive efforts of the state churches, the movement spread slowly around western Europe, primarily along the Rhine.
Officials killed many of the earliest Anabaptist leaders in an attempt to purge Europe of the new sect. Many believed that God did not condone killing or the use of force for any reason and were, therefore, unwilling to fight for their lives. The non-resistant branches often survived by seeking refuge in neutral cities or nations, such as Strasbourg.
Their safety was often tenuous, as a shift in alliances or an invasion could mean resumed persecution. If you agree with what I write here, pass it on. If not, leave a comment saying why. One comment at a time, and wait for approval. I was forced to wear pants as a young girl, by my parents. I always felt this was because they really wanted me to be a boy. Now I wear skirts, because when I put on pants I feel masculine.
Completely unbiblical. I have worn modest dresses and skirts my entire life and will never change. The bible clearly teaches modesty You just have to study it. It is something that your parents were deceived about and that I was also deceived about. I am going to share several excerpts on modesty from the book I am writing about the Amish and Mennonites.
There is not a major difference in the sexual abuse rate between conservative, modestly dressed girls and girls who dress according to what the dress experiment calls the immodest dress of the world. Total nudity in public is a God-given shame that a person, Christian or non-Christian, usually tries to avoid. There is a very wide range of opinions among professing Christians about what is modest and appropriate and what is not.
Jesus has not defined what is modest or what is immodest.
Mennonite churches have attempted to regulate modesty, feeling that the Bible alone is inadequate on the subject and that husbands and fathers cannot be trusted to regulate it in their own home. Modesty is a concept that is drilled into conservative Mennonite women. They are made to feel guilty and responsible if a man were to look at them in any way sexually. Jesus on the other hand, puts the responsibility on a man for his lust. Is a dress safe? Is a cape dress really modest with its double layer at the top and an open door at the bottom?
Can a dress really be labeled as modest for a young girl to wear? Little girls have great difficulty keeping their dresses down and end up showing their underwear at times. It is young girls and teens that are the ones most likely to be sexually abused. A friend of ours, who did not grow up in a Mennonite home, told us that she was taught growing up that dresses were immodest.
When I first heard it, I was surprised because it was the opposite of what I had been taught growing up.Mennonite Mom is a wonderful Etsy shop for those who either do not know how to sew or would rather be doing something else! Maybe you read about us in romance novels written by Beverly Lewis or Wanda Brunstetter. While some of the portrayals of the Mennonite and Amish culture may be correct in these shows and books, a lot are not.
I will be writing about the Mennonites here. First of all, I want to be very clear that we do not believe living as a Mennonite will save us. God calls us to live a holy life, and the way we live honors His commands. Our standards are safeguards to keep on the path to heaven, not some random laws that we are forced to follow. I am a Mennonite Christian. Please keep in mind that there is an enormous variety of Mennonites and not all practice every belief in the same way.
For instance, some groups of Mennonites wear only solid colored dresses and shirts, while other Mennonites wear simple prints. However, our fundamental belief, that everyone has sinned and can only be saved through the blood of Jesus, is the same.
I hope this gave you a small peek into a few of our practices as Mennonites. I want to write more in a later post. May God continue to richly bless you! Thank you for sharing about your heritage. It is a wonderful thing to have an understanding from first person explanation, than what is able to be understood from a TV show, movie, or book. As a born again Christian I hold also to the values as you do as a born again Christian, of headship, modesty, the evils of this sinful fallen world, etc. Thank you, Lisa! I feel blessed to have a heritage like this and even more thankful for salvation through Jesus!
